A History of European Knitting

A History of European Knitting

Knitting really caught on in Europe in the Middle Ages. With the growing popularity of knitted stockings, knitting became a household occupation. Apparently as many as two million pairs of stockings were exported from Britain to other parts of Europe by the end of the 1600's. It was Britain that invented and perfected knitting frames and machines. Knitting in Europe has quite a history.

When knitting caught on in Europe, it was quickly established as a true craft. The craft flourished in Scotland and England in the 14th and 15th centuries. In medieval Europe hand knitting had become an advanced craft by the 16th century. The first knitting trade guild, (the first trade union devoted to knitting professionals) was started in Paris in 1527. Guilds controlled the manufacture of and market for knitted goods during the Middle Ages. After the clergyman William Lee perfected a machine to knit stockings in England in 1589, the art of knitting gradually became a guild organized cottage industry.

Knitted garments became fashionable for the wealthy upper class, and silk gloves and stockings were highly prized. Knitting cottage industries sprang up throughout Britain and intricate techniques were perfected. Records show that the first sweaters were knit in the 17th century; before that smaller pieces and undergarments were knit.

William Lee, who invented the first knitting machine in 1589, also made a knitting frame which was so effective that few improvements were needed for 250 years. English people also created a ribbing device in 1748, a warp-knitting machine in 1775, and a circular knitting machine in the mid-1800's. These developments made possible the shaping of hosiery and other pieces of clothing. By the 19th century machine-knitted underclothes were common. It was in 1864 that a full-fashioned knitting machine was invented by William Cotton, and it used the same bearded-spring needle as William Lee's original model. Changes to the knitting machines in the 1900's increased their production speeds and offered wider choice in patterning the knitted fabrics. Now we have computer controlled knitting machines that offer greater versatility in our knitting.

To compete with the speed of the new knitting machines, many of the cottage industries started to knit garments in flat pieces which were sewn together; they worked piecemeal. Hand knitting, however, lost its ability to compete with knitting machines in the marketplace even with these faster techniques. Knitting as an art and a craft was kept alive only as a hobby

Different places in Europe created different types of knitting. Fair Isle knitting, which uses two colors stranded into intricate patterns, comes from a group of islands north of Britain. The earliest examples of this technique are thought to have been knitted around 1850. There is a legend that Fair Isle knitting was created in 1588 when a Spanish ship was wrecked off Fair Isle and the crew inspired the native knitters to try new ways of putting colors in a pattern. Fair Isle knitting became popular when the Prince of Wales wore a Fair Isle sweater at a public event in 1921.

How to Find a Reliable House Painter

How to Find a Reliable House Painter

You've decided it's time to bring in a professional to paint your home but how do you find a reliable house painter? There are many things to consider when making the important decision of who will paint your house. While it might be easy to find a painter it's not easy to know which ones are qualified and reliable so you know the work will be done to last.

A couple of places to look for a painter:

Ask around - have any of your family members, friends or acquaintances recently used a local painter? If so, go check out the work they did - there's nothing like seeing it with your own two eyes to determine if that painter did a good job.

Check for advertisements in the local community and regional newspapers.

Check with a few local contractors, real estate agents and your local paint store.

Once you've found them you should probably:

Check the Better Business Bureau for complaints against the painter you choose to hire.

Word of mouth is a powerful thing - ask around to see if anyone you know has heard anything negative about the painter you choose.

Ask for references - any reputable painter will gladly provide contact information for previous clients.

Ask the references or the people that referred the house painter if they were happy with the work, if the non-painted surfaces were protected and how the painter was to deal with, were they pleasant, on time and reliable?

Ask the painter to come out and see the scope of work and request a quote. Make sure the quote has details such as which areas will be painted and how many coats of paint will be provided at the price he's providing.

Once you've found a few painters that gain your initial approval and that are within your price range, there are a few key things you should be looking for.

Your house painter should have extensive knowledge and experience with regard to the tools they use like brushes, scrapers, tape and rollers. They should know how much paint and primer a job would require and what type of paint to use. They should also know things like how to remove wallpaper and how to properly fill a hole.

A responsible painter should have business insurance as well as worker's compensation insurance. If your painter doesn't have insurance and accidentally breaks something or hurts themselves it would be your responsibility to incur the charges associated with the accident. Ask for proof of insurance before hiring your house painter - it could save you a lot of money in the long run.

Also inquire about preparation of the area to be painted - will your house painter take all necessary actions to ensure the painting job is done correctly? Will holes need to be filled and sanded prior to painting? Will your painter be able to tell if an area will need to be primed before painting? How many coats of paint should each area be covered with?

Clean up is also a good area to ask questions about. Will your house painter leave your house in the manner in which they found it? Will they complete the job with respect for your rugs, ceilings and belongings? Non-painted surfaces should be properly protected with drop sheets.

The best house painter will be punctual, willing to answer all your questions and have all necessary materials and tools at their disposal.

Always request details of the job in writing - a written contract will protect you and the painter so that once completed everyone is happy with how it all went. The contract should include paint colors and paint brand to be used, the number of coats. Also specify the clean up requirements, the painter should be responsible for the removal of paint from any surfaces that did not require painting (floors, windows, etc.).

Keep in mind all of the information above and you should be able to find a reliable house painter that can get the job done for you at a reasonable price.

11 Surprising Benefits of CBD Edibles

11 Surprising Benefits of CBD Edibles

Have you tried CBD edibles?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is becoming one of the most popular supplements around.

CBD is a cannabinoid produced by the cannabis plant.

While it does not provide a psychotropic “high” like THC, there’s no doubt that CBD can have a positive effect on general health and wellbeing.

Yet, apart from puffing on a vapor pen or taking a capsule, how exactly do you consume CBD?

If you’re hoping to avoid inhaling, CBD edibles are an excellent option.

To give you the rundown on why these tasty treats are so great, here are 11 amazing benefits of CBD edibles:

1. CBD edibles provide long-lasting relief

CBD edibles have several benefits over smoking cannabis or inhaling a CBD vapor pen.

While it takes a while for CBD edibles to take effect (between 30 minutes to two hours), the result is relief that lasts longer than inhalation.

In a CBD edible, the active compound is combined with other foodstuffs.

This means that the CBD is released slowly over long periods of time as food is digested.

The result is a long-lasting CBD experience.

In fact, CBD edibles can last between two and four hours longer than inhaled CBD.

2. CBD is non-psychotropic
CBD may be a cannabis compound, but many are surprised to find that it does not cause a psychotropic “high”.

Instead, the cannabinoid offers consumers a mellow mood uplift with a sense of positive, alerted energy.

With their long-lasting nature, CBD edibles can provide prolonged relief from mild pains and daily stresses.

These would be a great option for anyone hoping to enjoy the benefits of cannabis without an over-the-top psychoactive experience.

3. CBD edibles are easy to make

While some prefer to make their own cannabutter or infused cooking oils, CBD edibles can be surprisingly simple to make.

Different CBD extractions can be added to cooked and baked goods for an added antioxidant boost.

CBD crystals, made with purified and isolated CBD, are now available in many cannabis access points and online.

Although you should know that isolated CBD tends to be less effective compared to whole-plant cannabis.

MCT oil tinctures infused with CBD are also handy to have around.

Both of these products are easy to dose, giving you more control over the amount of CBD available per serving.

4. Less risk of lung irritation
While vapor pens are more popular than ever, the long-term implications of inhaling hot oil are still yet to be determined.

Many vapor pens also contain added thinning agents, like propylene glycol (PG) and polyethylene glycol (PEG).

Research suggests that these thinning agents may produce toxic carcinogens when heated to temperatures above 436 (224).

While it is possible to find vapor pens that do not contain these additives, CBD edibles are an excellent way to avoid inhaling potentially toxic compounds.

This saves the lungs from irritation.

5. Allows for greater plant synergy
Cannabis isn’t the only therapeutic plant out there.

Evidence suggests that compounds in the herb, like CBD, interact with other plant molecules to produce amplified effects.

Lavender, for example, contains an aroma molecule called linalool.

Linalool belongs to a class of compounds called terpenes.

Terpenes are scent molecules that give many plants their unique fragrance.

As you may have guessed, cannabis contains an abundance of terpenes.

When making CBD edibles at home, adding other beneficial herbs to your culinary creation may help modulate the effects of the cannabinoid.

Linalool, the lavender compound, is known to have calming effects.

Mixing some CBD into a lavender tea or dessert may amplify the mellow effects of each herbal remedy.

Amazing, right?

6. They’re available online
Another great benefit of CBD edibles?

They’re available online.

While the precise regulations on CBD are a little fuzzy, many providers sell CBD online and ship around the United States.

CBD is also available in a handful of European countries.

CBD edibles sold online are “hemp-derived”. Hemp and cannabis are the same plant.

However, the word cannabis is often used when discussing varieties of the plant capable of producing psychoactive THC.

Hemp is frequently grown for fiber and seed, yet the term has recently been applied to high-CBD/low-THC cannabis cultivars.

In the United States, cannabis with less than 0.3 percent THC is considered hemp.

Hemp products sold online are made from this form of cannabis.

7. CBD balances the psychoactive effects of THC

Worried about getting little too elevated for comfort?

CBD edibles may help balance out a psychotropic THC.

While edibles tend to take a while to kick in, consuming a little CBD with your THC is a great way to moderate the psychoactive experience.

Research suggests that CBD can calm the psychoactive effects of THC, toning down what could be an uncomfortable experience for some.

Those that want a slight psychoactive experience may want to mix and match pre-dosed THC and CBD edibles.

8. CBD edibles are easy to dose
When you inhale CBD via a vape pen or through smoke, it can be very difficult to determine exactly how much CBD you are getting each time.

Many purchased CBD edibles come in pre-dosed servings, enabling you to calculate how much CBD you have consumed and how much you need to consume to achieve your desired results.

9. Edibles are discreet
Some forms of CBD can be cumbersome or impractical.

Even pocket vaporizers can get quite large and it may not always be convenient to pull out a pen vape to get your daily dose.

Those needing pain relief during a long flight or a focus boost during the workday will appreciate the ability to simply throw back a CBD gummy or two and get back to business.

No vape break required.

10. CBD is well-tolerated with minimal side effects
CBD can come with some side effects in high doses.

In fact, there is evidence that suggests that high-dose CBD may enhance the effects of pharmaceutical medications, making it necessary for consumers to lower their doses.

However, CBD is considered generally well-tolerated and even high-doses of the cannabinoid produce but minimal side effects.

A 2006 study published in the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research concluded that CBD was safe at a wide range of doses in both healthy and epileptic study participants.

11. CBD edibles are a helpful general remedy
Researchers are investigating different ways to use CBD in medicine.

Already, CBD-based pharmaceutical drugs have been proven successful in treating some types of epilepsy in clinical trials.

Yet, you don’t need to have a serious medical condition to benefit from CBD.

CBD edibles may also be beneficial supplements to those with milder and first-aid related ailments.

Many people pop an ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory drug after a minor injury, headache, or joint pain.

CBD, however, has been found to work in similar ways to these over-the-counter remedies without some of the harsh side effects like stomach ulcer and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Sounds like a step up, doesn’t it?

What's the deal with CBD?

What's the deal with CBD?

s If it seems like you're seeing CBD products everywhere, that's because you are. Thanks to the passage of the US Farm Bill in 2018, which legalized industrial hemp, and the legalization of medical and recreational cannabis at the state level, CBD products have exploded in availability and popularity over the last year.

This story discusses substances that are legal in some places but not in others and is for informational purposes only and not for the purpose of providing legal advice. You shouldn't do things that are illegal -- this story does not endorse or encourage illegal drug use.

Depending on where you live, you can find them at CVS, your local gas station, pet stores -- even Carl's Jr. And the industry shows no signs of slowing down: Sales of CBD products are expected to exceed $5 billion this year, a 706% increase over 2018, according to the Brightfield Group, a cannabis-focused research firm.

The only thing spreading faster than CBD appears to be confusion over what exactly it is and who it's for. Whether you're already a user or are just CBD curious, this primer will help you cut through the misinformation and get up to speed.

Now playing: Watch this: The future of medicinal marijuana is personalized pot 2:31 What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabinoid family that naturally occurs in the cannabis plant. Scientists have isolated 108 different types of cannabinoids in cannabis.

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is probably the best-known thanks to its psychoactive properties -- it's the one that gets you "high" -- but CBD is quickly gaining ground due to its potential therapeutic benefits.

What Really Is CBD and How Does It Work?

What Really Is CBD and How Does It Work?

CBD is the short form for cannabidiol. It is an important phytocannabinoid that is found in the hemp and is known to support the mind and the body in lots of different ways. CBD products in the shape of Cachets also contain cannabinoids, which have CBD extracts.

What makes CBD work?

How does CBD get to work? The body of humans contains a large network of constituent receptors, the system of endocannabinoids, which is critical to maintaining the overall wellness, along with helping the support systems for many of the physical processes in our body. Cannabinoids and CBD fit inside these receptors that help the human body with its efforts in maintaining good health.

Experience better health with the use of the CBD

You get to enjoy a sense of calmness and more focus. CBD affects learning positively and it also motivates learning. It is also helpful in reversing the symptoms of the Alzheimer disease. You can get a heart that is healthier by the use of the CBD. CBD has a lot of benefits that it brings to the heart, these include the capability of lowering high levels of blood pressure. You also get relief from the stresses that are part of your daily life. CBD has been known to provide therapeutic cures for symptoms like stress and anxiety, thus helping in the reduction of psychological levels of anxious behavior. It also helps in reducing the feeling of depression and anxiety.

The miracle of CBD

CBD is just a molecule, not any miracle. A lot of people can reap the significant benefits if they are provided access legally to these wide variety of remedies of cannabis, not merely to no THC or low THC products. CBD by itself may not always be enough to get the trick to work. There is a lot of compelling evidence to prove that CBD functions best when it is combined with the likes of THC and the entire spectrum consisting of other components of cannabis.

To be able to figure out how to go about optimizing your therapeutic application of cannabis has been the driving factor that is behind one of the greatest experiments in the days of democracy. The result of this finding is called medical marijuana and it has been observed from one state to another and one country to another in the very recent years.

The coming up of the very potent oil concentrates of cannabis, CBD rich non intoxicating products and highly innovative and smokeless systems of delivery have changed the therapeutic area. This has also led to a huge change in the public conversation around cannabis.

How to Start Affiliate Marketing and Earn a Good Living

How to Start Affiliate Marketing and Earn a Good Living

The important question newbies ask is how to start affiliate marketing, and who really should become an affiliate. Understandable question, because newbies are searching for the logical way to get started in making money online.

To answer this question, first address the matter of what skills you have. In what do you excel? What topics are you most interested in?

Are your job skills giving you the satisfaction, and especially the financial rewards you deserve? Maybe your skills are being wasted, or underutilized. If your boss is getting all the benefits from your skills, maybe you should consider working for yourself!

And then you did finally look into starting your own business, only to realize the capital you need is way beyond your means? You may be surprised to know that becoming an online affiliate marketer can be achieved with very little capital.

The second deterrent to starting an offline business on your own, is the risk involved. And yes, there is a definite risk factor to consider. Even though financing is available there is still the risk factor. An average of 40% of new small businesses fail in the first year. 80% won't make it to the 5th year.

If you make it through that first year in your uphill battle, there are still several challenges that you have to face. It could take several years before you see any serious profit that you could make your living with. Most of us cannot wait this long. Most people need a constant flow of money coming in to meet our living requirements. So then, who should become an affiliate? An online affiliate is the equivalent of an offline commissioned salesperson.

Becoming an online affiliate can get you started on the road to independence with little risk to you. By becoming an affiliate you sell the products of another company. The merchant you promote takes care of the advertising and creation of the items. He also delivers the product, usually by online downloads. He then pays you your commission. Your only responsibility is to SELL. Your main cost, if any may be for advertising.

The average commission paid for sales of downloadable products is 50% of the selling price. The commission for selling hard goods ranges between 4% to 20%. So you can see here, that selling online products looks quite promising. People who enjoy independence and flexibility in their work make good affiliates. Those that desire or need flexible working hours can gain the most from being an affiliate. You're paid according to how well you perform, not on how many hours you work.

You can schedule your work around your family needs. Be flexible with your family requirements, but don't overdo it. You must put it the needed hours to succeed. If you're independent and a self starter than a career as an affiliate is sure starting to look promising. If you can stay motivated and driven then do consider becoming an affiliate. You can run your own affiliate business from home with no cost or obligation to you.

You normally will start part-time until you make enough to quit your job. If you are good at working independently then as an affiliate you can't go wrong. You'll have the freedom to work as and when you please and will realize the rewards of your own hard work.

But make no mistake, it's hard work. There's no magic pill for making money online. If you don't put in enough hours, and stick with it long enough, you will surely lose out on a good opportunity. You'll have to make some sacrifices, such as watching little or no TV.

Start putting your skills and creativity to work for you instead of giving them away only to your job. In the long run, you could be well rewarded for the effort.

Bicyclists - An Almost Perfect Warm-Weather Rail-to-Trail Bike

Bicyclists - An Almost Perfect Warm-Weather Rail-to-Trail Bike

Most of the Midwestern limestone-gravel rail-to-trails are fairly flat. Just about any bike will work on them satisfactorily with minor adjustments for long or short rides, depending on the season or weather they are carried out in. Still, the frequent or long-distance trail rider needs a bike that is equipped both for the expected and unexpected situations.

The "steamrolled" rail-to-trail surface stays fairly hard, even during light rains. However, this hard-gravel surface gets soft during heavy rains or extended wet weather. Also, because these trails follow the old undisturbed railroad corridors, many kinds of trees, shrubs, plants, and thorny bushes grow next to them. The larger trees often form canopies over these trails. Thus, the seasonal or windy conditions yield plant debris that litters these trails sporadically. The debris, which includes, nuts, fruit, fallen broken branches, and small sharp twigs, can cause flat tires. To start with then, a trail rider must be able to fix flat tires although not often, and sometimes, never.

The following information and items make the rail-to-trail bicycle dependable and useful.

Bike type. The hybrid or mountain types equipped with touring tires are the most popular for these trails. Yet, the narrow-tire road bike, which can ride smoother, faster, and more comfortably for some riders, works well on them during dry weather. But, to keep this bike from sinking into the softened trail during wet weather, wider tires (25-to-32-mm wide) having thorn liners can be installed ahead of time. These tires will not wear a rider down as fast as the narrow ones during wet conditions.

Rack, bag, and trunk. Long-trail riders must also carry moderate amounts of extra equipment, food, and water. A hanging frame bag works well for carrying spare tire tubes and boots, tire levers, a hand air-pump, and the minimum tools needed for tightening anything on the bike that can loosen. A rear rack with a small trunk works well for carrying anything else, e.g., cleaning gear, lubrication, rain and sun gear, blanket, small tarp, energy food and juice, extra water, and personal items.

Fenders and mud-flaps. Hard-surface gravel trails are dusty during hot or dry weather. The dust raised by the front bike tire can clog the bike's chain and gears. Also, during wet weather, both of the bike's tires will spray limestone mud all over the bike, rider, and any attached equipment. This kind of mud builds up thick and heavy, and gets into everything, including the bicycle gears. Quick-connect fenders plus home-made mud flaps reduce these adverse effects considerably. The mud flaps can be cut from stiff rubber strips or from large plastic bottles.

Other accessories. Small items that improve the usefulness of a trail bike are:

compass for knowing the directions if a detour in required
bicycle computer for knowing distances and mileage
headlight and rear-light for early morning or late evening riding
side reflectors or reflecting tape for crossing roadways and driveways
handlebar-attached rear-view mirror for all-around visibility
extra handlebar grips for changing hand positions (prevents carpel tunnel syndrome)
horn or beeper for passing other riders, hikers, walkers, dog walkers etc
attached easy-to-grab dry food for loose dogs or other stray animals
attached easy-to-grab protective device (e.g., small pepper-spray canister) for just-in-case.

The Advantages Of a Metal Building

The Advantages Of a Metal Building

When it comes time to decide what material to use for construction of a large or small building, metal is often the final decision. There are many advantages to steel buildings, especially when compared to traditional building materials, whether they are put together by a building firm or come straight from a metal building manufacturer.

In the past, wood and brick were the materials used most commonly in construction. These days, with the introduction of steel buildings that have been pre-engineered, everything is very different. This way of constructing buildings is more flexible than other approaches, better for the environment, and inexpensive to implement. Metal buildings are constructed for a wide range of purposes all over the world today.

Another reason so many companies choose to construct steel buildings is because metal building manufacturers are well known for providing excellent services to the client and making sure everything is implemented successfully. The entire process from start to finish goes more smoothly with metal construction methods.

Steel building manufacturers start by finding out what your needs are, and then come up with an initial design. These companies will work with your business to navigate the world of building codes and other rules that metal buildings must follow. Whether you're building a pole barn, storage building, or metal garage, certain specifications have to be met for construction to move forward.

The manufacturer also comes up with detailed blueprints and procedures for fitting and erecting the metal building. If your business doesn't already have a general contractor, manufacturers often find one for you. Prefab buildings are the most convenient way to construct a building and have it finished in a short period of time. Companies that construct prefab buildings may also give suggestions pertaining to doors, windows, and other design features such as layout, so that the entire project goes smoothly and efficiently.

The manufacturer even comes up with finished plans so that the whole project will go off without a hitch. Businesses continue to use metal building manufacturers because they provide all the services you need for construction. And it doesn't matter what type of building you wish to construct - a pole barn, storage buildings, or a metal garage - metal building manufacturers will cater to the client's needs.

All pieces are custom-made to fit when they arrive on the construction site, and don't require any modifications, so that all the work that occurs on site is focused on erecting the building in the fastest amount of time possible. This saves plenty in construction costs and ensures that your building goes up quickly.

You can expect savings of about a third of what you pay for traditional materials, even if the price of metal fluctuates. The savings come from the lower labor costs as well as the faster construction time.

Weak Hamstrings: Cause Of Lower Back Pain

Weak Hamstrings: Cause Of Lower Back Pain

Tight, inflexible hamstrings get a lot of attention as a cause of lower back pain, but weak hamstrings may also be the source. The hamstring is actually a set of three muscles that run from the pelvis to the knee in the back of the thigh. These muscles are used to facilitate the bending of the knee behind the midline of the body while the hip is extended, such as when running or walking. The group also helps to keep the knee aligned.

Tight quadriceps and weak hamstrings are a common muscle imbalance. We tend to use our quads more in everyday life, and many popular exercises at the gym emphasize the isolated development of quads. There are two main ways in which weak hamstrings can cause back pain.

1. Biomechanical

Hamstrings work with the quadriceps to stabilize movements of the knee and pelvis. This requires that the muscles are equal in strength, length and flexibility. If the hamstrings are weaker than the quadriceps, then the pulley system formed by the muscles is disrupted. The tighter, shorter quadriceps will pull downward on the pelvis in front and upward on the knee, since the hamstrings are too weak to exert a counterbalancing pull.

When the pelvis is pulled down in front, the lower back arches inward. This is called hyper-extension of the lumbar spine. Tight hip flexors and erector spinae muscles in the lower back often accompany weak hamstrings because of this postural change. As vertebral angles change in the spine, there is an increase of pressure placed on the back side of spinal discs, which can lead to premature disc wear, bulging or herniation. These disc changes can cause sciatica.

2. Fatigue

Weak hamstrings can quickly turn into tight hamstrings. Weak muscles tire quickly due to their lack of strength, and tired muscles go into contraction to protect themselves from further use. This forcible tightening of the muscle sets up a ripe situation for strain; the quadriceps fire into action before the hamstring has recovered and lengthened. A pulled, strained or torn hamstring can result.

When the hamstring is injured, the body will naturally compensate for it by employing other nearby muscles to do the work the hamstrings normally do. Lower back muscles may be called into action when the leg is moved, though this action is beyond its scope of natural duties. The muscles in the back and hips that compensate for hamstrings can become sore and strained.

Signs Of Hamstring Weakness

There are a few symptoms that point to hamstrings as the cause of back pain. If your hamstrings are weaker than your quadriceps, you may notice that your bottom sticks out and that you have an exaggerated lumbar arch.

If you have localized pain in the hamstring and pain in the lower back, then a strained hamstring is indicated.

Another sign of a quadricep/hamstring imbalance is clicking or cracking of the knee when it is bent or straightened.
